Chainsaw Wood Carving

woodwork techniques

Many artists are starting to explore the art of wood carving with a chainsaw. The art is a natural extension of their skill set and often involves a combination of traditional carving techniques and modern designs. Crager and Tracie, his wife have been carving wood masterpieces since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters help out with staining or painting occasionally. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson, a chainsaw wood carver from Reedsport in Oregon, is Rich Anderson. He is a Poughkeepsie resident and lives in Oregon with his wife and their son. Anderson holds several degrees in the fine arts and teaches art to children in the Pre-K to fifth grades. Anderson has carved many sculptures across Long Island and in Colorado. His work includes sculptures of standing trees and smaller pieces such as corn ears. He is currently completing a sign design for Youngs Farm Riverhead.

A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. The chainsaw wood carving process is more sustainable than hammers or chisels because it can be recycled. Anderson promotes his business by word of mouth. He has created a huge cobra and great blue heron to help a Wading River mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie Dugas created this life-sized wizard from wood. It is a stunning example of her skills as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49-year old woman lives in Clare, Nova Scotia between Digby & Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was just one of many artists who displayed their work at the Canada Day weekend in Sydney. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager did not consider himself an artist. His skills with a chainsaw were only averagely proficient. But his passion for carving led to a full-time occupation six years later. Crager has sold more than $1,000,000 worth of carvings across the Eastern U.S. since then. Crager was brought up in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. As a child, he watched a chainsaw carver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager favors white pine over other wood types because it is easily accessible from tree trimming companies. But many prefer to use other types of wood. Crager will follow the grain of the wood to create his pieces. Crager knows what he wants to create before he even begins a project. But he may change his mind halfway through. The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is an expert chainsaw and wooden carver. His wood carvings often include many animals and are very detailed. His creations are a hit with tourists and locals alike. Blue Arrow Farm's entrance and coffee shop are adorned with chainsaw sculptures that are so detailed and large. Don Oriolo owns Blue Arrow Farm and is an artist and manager of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo's wife, met during a New Jersey State Fair chainsaw competition.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. He was already proficient at hand carving, but he hadn't ever used a machine like a chainsaw. His carvings now feature an otter, mother bear and squirrel looking out of a tree. He's now getting ready for the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

Many people learn how to make furniture in order to set up an online business. But if you're just getting started building furniture, there are other ways to earn money besides selling on Etsy. You could also sell at craft fairs, or other local events. For those who want to build their own furniture, you might offer workshops. If you have the experience to be a carpenter, builder, or a designer, you may consider offering your services in remodeling homes or creating custom pieces.

Home Depot can sell hardwood lumber. They sell all kinds of wood products, including flooring, cabinets, furniture, etc.

Statistics

  • In 2014, there were just over 237,000 jobs for all woodworkers, with other wood product manufacturing employing 23 percent; wood kitchen cabinets and countertop manufacturing employing 21 percent. (theartcareerproject.com)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)

How To

How do you measure wood accurately?

We use several methods to measure wood. We use a digital caliper (a tool used to measure distances), a laser level (used to make sure your work surface is flat), and a bubble level (used to make sure your work surface is perpendicular).

A digital caliper has two jaws that open and close. One jaw holds a measured object and the other measures distances between the points. The digital caliper can be used to measure small distances such as the thickness of wood.

Laser levels feature an infrared-light beam that projects lines across the floor. The laser emits red dots on the line. By looking down the line, you can see whether the surface is even or not. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The center of the device contains a bubble. As long the bubble is not in the middle, the device will show you whether the surface of the object is level. The bubble levels can be used to check the accuracy of smaller areas.
