Scroll Saws for Marquetry

shop tips and tricks

Intarsia is an Italian term for marquetry. Its meaning has been expanded at this site to include the technique of starting from a thick base wood and sculpting individual pieces to create a three-dimensional effect. Intarsia is not like other marquetry methods. They do not have a background layer of wood around them. The project is surrounded instead by a piece or base wood that acts as a backdrop for each individual piece.

How To

How can you accurately measure wood?

Wood measurement can be done using several methods. We use a digital ruler (a tool to measure distances), laser level (used for leveling your work surface), and bubble level (used for levelling your work surface).

Two jaws are available on a digital scaler. One can open and the other close. One jaw holds a measured object and the other measures distances between the points. Digital calipers are great for measuring small distances, such as thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels use an infrared beam of light to project a line across the ground. The laser emits red dots on the line. You can check if the surface is level by looking down at the line. For larger surfaces, laser leveling is the best method of checking accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The device's center bubble is visible. The device will inform you if the surface is level if the bubble is in the center. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
