How To

How to join wood without using nails

Woodworking is an enjoyable hobby. It is relaxing and enjoyable because you can create something useful with wood. Sometimes you may want to join two pieces together of wood without using nails. This article will explain how to do this so that your woodwork projects stay beautiful.

Before you can join the wood pieces together, you need to remove any rough edges. You don't want any sharp corners to cause problems later. After you have completed this step, you are ready to glue your boards together.

When working with hardwood, glue should be applied only to one side. For softwoods like cedar and pine, glue should be applied to both sides. Once you have applied the glue, press down on the boards until they are fully attached. Make sure you let the glue dry before moving on to the next step.

Once you've glued your boards together you will need to drill holes in the joints to accommodate screws. Depending on the type of screw that you use, the size of these holes will vary. If you are going to use a half-inch wood screw, you will need to drill at least 3/4 inch deep.

After drilling your holes, drive the screws into the board's backside. Avoid hitting the board's top surface. Otherwise, you could ruin the finish. Don't drive the screws too far into the end. This will prevent the wood from splitting.

After your project is completed, you will need to protect it from the weather. You can either cover the entire furniture or just the top. You'll want a product that lasts for many years. You can choose from oil-based varnishes or polyurethane, shellac and lacquer as examples.

These products are available at most home improvement stores. Be sure to choose the right one for your project. Don't forget to keep in mind that some finishes are toxic. Protective gear should always be worn when handling these finishes.
